RUNNING ON PEOPLE POWER:
I am an attorney, mother, activist and law professor, born and raised in the 125th District.
I graduated from Wesleyan University, then attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School on a public-interest scholarship. After law school, I moved to Washington D.C. to work on fraud investigations, government contracts and impact litigation.
Following that, I returned to New York as a union organizer for UNITE HERE, where I spent sixteen hours a day for years organizing unions across New York State. I knocked on thousands of doors and listened as workers spoke of the challenges they faced. I helped them mobilize to win contracts that guaranteed better working conditions. I have spent my career working for the benefit of New Yorkers everywhere.
I am the principal attorney at the Gibson Law Firm, a public-interest oriented law firm where I dedicate fifty percent of my time to litigate for civil rights. The other half of my practice revolves around serving the needs of small business owners, families in crisis, and defending indigent clients through the assigned counsel program.
I am passionate about free speech, civil rights and civil liberties and have won several high-profile victories in these areas. I’ve spent thousands of hours working pro bono with local movements and causes. I was the lead attorney for We Are Seneca Lake, the Evict Ice protests, and the Extinction Rebellion. I’ve represented many organizations—examples include the Youth Farm Project, South Side Community Center, and Mutual Aid Tompkins. I also teach part-time at the Cornell University Law School in the area of movement lawyering.
I am a past president of the Finger Lakes Women’s Bar Association, a former member of the executive board of the Women’s Bar of the State of New York, and have served as the Secretary of the Board for the Alternatives Federal Credit Union. I have also participated in recommendation committees for nominees to the New York Court of Appeals and other positions; reviewed, drafted and commented on state and federal proposed legislation and policy; and worked with lobbyists, activists and movements to fight for the rights and advancement of the people of New York.
The 125th District is my home. Giving back to this community that has given me so much is my number one priority.
